New Porsche 911 Shifts up a Gear

For the 2011 model year, Porsche gave 911 drivers the option of a standard six-speed manual transmission or available seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission. Few would argue, especially given the race-track inspired technology and distinct, intelligent design, that it's more fun to drive the 911 with the manual. More than a hands-on experience, it fosters a rare emotional link between man and machine.
Braman Porsche is happy to inform you, Porsche has heard drivers opinion loud and clear. Effectively, they're adding a new seven-speed manual transmission to the 2012 Porsche 911. We're still on the edge of our seats waiting for the new 911 to hit our dealership floors at 2801 Okeechobee Blvd in West Palm Beach, FL. But, from what we've seen, it drives amazingly.
As you might expect the configuration of the new seven-speed manual transmission fitted in the 2012 Porsche 911 employs shorter distances between gears one and six with the push to seven thrillingly wide. The mapping of gear is identical to that used in the optional PDK automatic transmission, and ultimately serves as a six-speed with seventh-gear overdrive.
According to Porsche, the results of using a seven-speed manual transmission in the new 2012 911 are two-fold. Not only does it promise drivers the pickup and performance the legendary 911 stands for. It also delivers better fuel efficiency. Clearly the decision is a win-win.
